Est. 1910

Northcliffe Golfing Society (1910)

There were four winners at the West Hill fixture with blue skies and warm sunshine.

First was David Defroand who narrowly won the main trophy on countback, the Rothermere Challenge Cup, scoring 39pts.

Beaten into second place, also with 39pts, was Ian McGowan and this meant his 2nd place topped the annual “Order of Merit” to win the Society’s “Golfer of the Year” competition.

Champagne was won for “Nearest the Pin” on the challenging 13th hole, by Clive Heard and in the “Back the Winner” Competition, main trophy winner David had the sense to invest £5 on himself to win the jackpot. With a roll-over including £110 and a final total of £230 in the kitty, David won £180 with £50 for the Society funds.

There was a surprise “Thank You” bottle of champagne presented by the Society to retiring West Hill assistant secretary, Jane Mulligan, for all her help over the years.

The prizes were presented by Society vice-Captain, Barry Theobald, who will be taking over as Captain next year, who announced that Captain Nick Stevens had been unable to attend as he had just had a new addition to his family, a baby Boy!

Secretary Garth Burden told the players that they should get their team entries in for the last fixture of the year, the Christmas Scramble at The Berkshire, Monday, November 13 as places were filling up.  He said that the Scramble would be his last fixture to organise as he would be handing over the running of the Society at the Scramble after 22 years as the secretary.
