New Northcliffe member Tom Pickworth did what many people have done in the past at Society fixtures by not investing £5 on himself to win the main trophy of the day.
As an unknown factor of his golfing ability, he was also overlooked by everyone else playing so there is now a healthy £80 roll-over into the “Back the Winner” kitty for Northwood.
Tom, a member at Leatherhead Golf Club and playing off his official WHS handicap of 19.7, won by the tightest of margins, beating Lee Terry to win The Rothermere Cup on countback with both scoring 37pts round the tough RED course.
Both players now face handicap cuts for their next three golf fixtures, Tom 2-shots and Lee 1-shot.
Close behind in third with 34pts was Vice-Captain Barry Theobald, who presented the prizes,
Mike Creaby won Champagne for “Nearest the Pin” on the RED course 18th hole in the morning competition, but there was a surprise in the afternoon competition.
Maybe it was the lunch-time refreshment or the ball bouncing and running off the slick green, no one managed to stay on the Par-3 Blue Course 1st hole to win the afternoon champagne.
Winners of the afternoon greensomes competition was Martin Smith and his guest Kris Babb.
Guest Chris Pinnock won £20 for his 2 in the morning round, with £20 going to the Society funds.
Next fixture is Northwood, Monday, August 15
