Breathtaking panoramic views of Poole Harbour provided a spectacular backdrop for two memorable days of golf, camaraderie and good‑humoured rivalry, as the Northcliffe and Press Golfing Societies met for their annual clash.
The true spirit of the competition was defined not by the disappointing result – a resounding victory for the PGS – but by the strength of the friendships renewed and the new ones forged between the two teams.
The rolling heathland of the Isle of Purbeck Golf Club in Dorset proved both a joy and a challenge. Players battled bracing 40mph gusts with varying degrees of elegance, while some even discovered unexpected mastery over the tricky greens.
By the time everyone returned to the hotel, the match results felt almost secondary. Over refreshments and a well‑earned meal, stories became more dramatic, putts grew longer and the bonds between players grew stronger still.
The Press Golfing Society, captained by former Daily Express editor, Hugh Whittow, accepted the Northcliffe Challenge Cup with characteristic grace. But in truth, victory belonged to everyone who took part – with both societies already discussing plans for next year’s fixture.
Northcliffe Golfing Society team skipper, Lee Terry, summed it up: “It’s the kind of competition where the wind might beat you, the greens might humble you, but the friendships always win. That’s why we come back year after year.”
