New member Dan Schwarz came home a clear winner at Royal Cinque Ports and was promptly cut by more than the handicap rules for his impressive play.
Not having played regular golf for many years, Dan, took a few holes to start his impressive round but soon gave a solid display of ball striking to win the Northcliffe Cup.
His 39pts around one of the country’s toughest links courses, with the back nine holes being played into a strong wind that proved to be the undoing of so many players, Dan managed to keep his scoring going well enough to beat Lisa Heywood’s 33 pts into second place. In third was Barry Theobald with 30pts with Ian McGowan in fourth with 28pts.
Dan’s win did not take everyone by surprise as, playing in the Society’s “Double Header” weekend, he had tuned himself up at North Foreland on the Sunday match against the Club, with a strong performance with playing partner Will Flint.
Trophy winners are normally cut two shots under the rules, but the Handicap Committee having reviewed the winning scorecard decided that Dan’s performance was worthy of a three-shot penalty so he will be playing off 15 for his next three Society golf days.
Lisa, who last year had an amazing scoring run over several fixtures, showed signs of coming back into form and was cut one shot to 14.
There were four winners in the “Back the Winner” competition with both Lisa and John Heywood, John Morgan and guest Sue Diamond, all investing £5 on Dan to be the winner and collected £25 each with £40 going into the Society funds.
Another big winner was Society member Jayne Burden, whose shot on the tough Par 3 4th hole won her the Champagne for “Nearest the Pin” and scooped the “2’s” pot as the only player managing a “2” during the competition. With a carryover of £52 from the previous Northwood fixture, there was £100 in the kitty so Jayne won £60 with £40 going to the funds.
Vice Captain Barry presented the prizes and thanked the Club for making the Society so welcome and a special thanks to the catering staff for the carvery prize-giving meal.
