Welcome to another great year with the Northcliffe and what a wonderful way to get our golf fixtures under way with a day at THE GROVE

The moment you drive into this Championship course complex you realise what a great golfing treat is in store. The staff are on hand to unload your clubs, there is free use of the impressive practice range with balls lined up ready to be used, a course planner, bag tag, tees and pencil handed out at the start of your round, 18-holes on the course that recently hosted the British Masters and where Tiger Woods has set an amazing record of consecutive eagles on a long Par 5 , and then to end proceedings there is lunch followed by the prize-giving.

The full list of our fixtures, dates and details are on this website, but just to wet the appetite. The Grove is followed by Walton Heath in May; The Berkshire July; Northwood August; North Foreland match and Royal Cinque Ports the following day and West Hill.   What a selection and don’t forget the Inter-company in Portugal with matches at Royal Obidos, Praia del Rey and Westcliffs.

The Grove sees the start of the annual “Order of Merit” competition that runs throughout the season, with the top four players taking part in a play-off for the “Golfer of the Year” trophy.   This competition is not won on the points scored at golf days, but the total of your best 3 finishing positions during the year and is free to enter.

The draw also takes place for the Match Play knock-out competition, again free to enter, with matches played either at your local courses or at our golf fixtures.  If you want to enter but cannot play at The Grove, you can still enter by emailing the secretary, Garth Burden.

Full staff members pay £75 for The Grove and this is heavily subsidised from the Society’s Funds.  Associate members who are former full time staff now working elsewhere, but not with a direct rival company, will pay £85  and guests, if numbers permit, £115.

The Clubhouse opens early at 7.15 a.m so plenty of time for a bacon or sausage roll with tea or coffee all included.  Then out to the practice area to warm up before starting your game from the Gold Tees.  It’s an 18 holes stableford singles competition off full handicap for the Burton Challenge Cup, holder Roland Agambar, with  Champagne for “Nearest the Pin” is on the 13th.  Collect your ball sweep ticket and have a go at picking out who will win the trophy in the “Back the Winner” fund raising competition for £5 a go but you must sign up on the entry sheet before going out to play.

There will be a 2-Tee start, the 1st and 10th which will speed up the round with the prize-giving taking place after  lunch.   The list of playing partners and tee-times will be circulated before the day.
