Society handicap “guru” Ian McGowan keeps an up-to-date record of all scores and form during the season, cutting winners and runners-up at every meeting.
So he made it that much easier for himself at Walton Heath by winning the main competition of the day, The Rothermere Trophy.
His 39pts on the Old Course was well clear of runner-up Clive Heard who scored 34pts, so Ian got the red pen out and cut himself two shots and took one shot off Clive.
Society Captain Nick Stevens was third, losing out to Clive on countback with Chester Stern close behind in 4th with 33pts and Joe Marvell 5th, again on countback, with 32pts.
Not only did Ian win the main trophy, but he won champagne for being Nearest the Pin on the 17th and to top his day off, he picked himself in the “Back the Winner” competition and as the only person to do so, won £60 with £35 for the funds.
It’s not often that there is only one person to score a “2” during their round but Edward Hawkins scooped the kitty, winning £20 with £20 for the funds.
Morning guest prize was won by Lee Goodey with 29pts.
The afternoon competition on the New Course was drawn greensomes and the winners were Captain Nick Stevens and guest Craig Smith with 40pts with Nick Radcliffe and guest Lee Goodey in second with 37 pts.
The Champagne for Nearest the Pin was won by guest Malcolm Ginger.
The next fixture takes place at The Berkshire on Monday, July 11.
