Society handicap guru was on the other end of a handicap revision when he came in with an amazing 40pts at The Berkshire fixture.
Playing off 10 handicap, Ian who so often has to register big cuts to other player’s handicaps, reached the magical 40pts that meant a 3-shot penalty cut for the next three golf days under the Northcliffe rules that he monitors.
His win, around the Blue Course, included many single putts and an eagle three on the Par Five third hole and he now has to come to terms with playing off  7-handicap!
“Just one of those golfing days we all dream about, everything just happened and to do it on this amazing course was the icing on the cake” he said as he received the President’s Cup from Society Captain, Lisa Heywood.
Three points behind was Alan Jackson who has cut one shot to 13 for his 37pts with Barry Theobald in third with 35pts, beating Keith Cottington into fourth on count back with Pat Kinnear in fifth with 34 pts.
There was another handicap shock in the afternoon when high 28-handicapper Edward Hawkins who has “won” the Wooden Spoon on many occasions but having worked hard on his game for some time, cruised to a brilliant score to win the Lady Rothermere Cup with his afternoon greensomes partner, guest Graeme Elliott.  Their 45pts around the challenging Red Course was six points clear of Pat Kinnear and Peter Williams, with Alan Jackson and June McFarlane in third place with 36 pts.
“I’ve slowed the swing down and the practicing has really helped,” said a beaming Graham as he received his prize.
Both Berkshire courses were in immaculate condition and the greens were so tricky that no one was able to score a “2” so £42 went to Society funds.  Champagne for “Nearest the Pin” in the morning on the Blue Course opening Par Three was won by Craig Fawcett and in the afternoon, on the Red course 18th hole, it was that Edward Hawkins who collected his second prize of the day!
Three people collected £35 each in the “Back the Winner” competition with £30 going into the funds. Trophy winner Ian wisely back himself along with June McFarlane and John Bowman.
