Team Captains
Alongside the Executive Officers, the Committee is enhanced by the enthusiasm and expertise brought by the team Captains in the Inter-Company competition.
Lord Rothermere
Captain: Chairman's Team
As President of the Society and Chairman of the Daily Mail and General Trust, Jonathan has the pick of the top golfers within the company for his team - although many argue that this has less influence than his remarkable leadership as his team strives for yet another win in the Inter-Company competition.
His wife, the Viscountess Rothermere, is a brilliant supporter of the Society and regularly attends the annual overseas meetings, adding a wit, charm and very much needed glamour to the proceedings.
John Bird
Captain: HQL
John is a member of the main board of Associated Newspapers both as Managing Director of Harmsworth Quays Printing Limited and as Group Personnel Director.
In addition to managing the printing plant at Surrey Quays he is responsible for the Company’s other printing contracts nation-wide.
He has spent all his working life in printing; the last 25 years have been in national newspapers.
He became a member of the Northcliffe Golfing Society in 1995 upon his return to HQP and was elected a committee member in 1998. He is also Captain of the HQP Golf Society.
Guy Zitter
Captain: Daily Mail
Arguably the best-looking of all the team captains, and certainly the most renowned, Guy is a quite remarkable golfer.
He is a uniquely inspirational leader, universally adored by his team and someone who mixes easy charm with remarkable modesty.
David Henderson
Captain: A&N Media
A costly transfer fee enabled David to switch teams from Northcliffe Media to take over the Captaincy of the mighty Associated Newspaper winning team that sweeps up all trophies before it. David’s computer expertise and networking skills transfers to the golf course with keyboard ease of operation and switches golfing applications from drives to putting with downloaded ease so that there are no glitches in his game.
Chris Coward
Captain: Northcliffe Media
A stalwart supporter of the Society over the years and a regular in the Inter-Company competition, Chris travels the country checking out the latest performances and form of possible players before deciding on team selection. His team are the “unknown” factor in the competition and even though they have to travel very long distances from all parts of the country this never seems to affect their form on the golf course and they are feared by all who get drawn against them.
Bob Cass
Captain: The Mail on Sunday
If his golf was as good as his jokes then the enigmatic and ever cheerful Sports journalist who leads the mighty Sunday newspaper golf team would be unbeatable. But the much travelled raconteur who livens up all proceedings with his endless stories takes his team where others have feared to tread ... and that includes the much sought after Wooden Spoon at the annual Inter Company competition!
John Leitch
Captain: Metro
New kids on the block “Metro” have a formidable Captain to lead them into the Inter Company competition. A member of Metro’s executive team and playing out of Haggs Castle Golf Club in Glasgow off a very impressive 8 handicap, John’s boyish good looks perfectly embody the vigour of the whipper-snappers in the Metro team. John’s trusting that the youthful exuberance of his team will out-weigh the crafty experience and course knowledge of the old hands in the other teams.
